Scanning documents on iPhone, properly
Taking the photo is the easy part. It is also the part every scanner app stops at.
What every scanner app does
Detect the page edges, correct the perspective, clean up the contrast, export a PDF. This is a solved problem — the built-in Notes app does it, and it does it well. If all you need is a straightened PDF, you do not need to install anything.
Where they stop
You end up with a file. The file is named after the moment you pressed the shutter:
Scan_047.pdf, or IMG_4021.HEIC. Six weeks later that is not a document,
it is a lottery ticket. And a folder holding Scan_001 through Scan_048
is not organisation — it is a haystack you built yourself.
The filing was always the actual job. Scanning just moved the pile from the counter to the phone.
What to look for instead
| Capability | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Names the file from the page | “Hydro Bill — Feb 2026” is a document. “IMG_4021” is a guess. |
| Files it automatically | A folder you have to choose is a folder you will eventually stop choosing. |
| Searches inside the page | The difference between finding a policy number and scrolling a camera roll for nine minutes. |
| Lifts the dates | A due date printed on a bill is useless if it lives only on the bill. |
| Answers questions | “What did I pay the plumber in March?” is the question you actually have. |
What NativeScan is
A document scanner that treats naming and filing as the product rather than an afterthought. It reads each page as you scan it, names the file after what is on it, sorts it into a folder, pulls out key dates, and lets you ask questions across everything you have scanned — showing which document it took each answer from, so you can check its work.
It is free on iPhone, with ads and weekly limits on the AI features. Documents stay on your device: no account, no sync, and therefore no recovery if the phone is lost without a backup. That trade is deliberate, and it is the honest version of “private by default.”
NativeScan scans a document, names it after what’s on it, and files it — so the next time you need it, you can just search for it.
